Custom Play Mat Contest Winner

November is nearly over and there is finally a winner for the custom card contest. Read on to find out who won!

In case this is your first time hearing about this, I started a contest early-October centered around artwork created by artists who have contributed to our game. Those who were interested in entering the contest had to pick the art and create an encounter card (or cards) with the chosen art. The catch was that the pool of art came from the artists’ non-LOTR work. All of this for the chance to win a play mat with some amazing custom art provided by Jake Murray. I’m a huge fan of the way he has shown Gollum throughout the life of the game. We talked about a different portrayal of the tragic character and this was the end result:

I, for one, can’t wait to see how this comes out as a play mat. Now let’s get on to the winner. For starters, click here to see what others created with the below art:

Grenzo, Dungeon Warden by Lucas Graciano – From Magic: The Gathering

El Huesped de Dracula (The Guest of Dracula / Dracula’s Guest) by Sebastian Giacobino

Death by Ryan Barger – From Magic: The Gathering

Land of the Living Skies by Joel Hustak

Reliquary by A. M. Sartor

Exhalation of Decay by Dimitri Bielak – From Lord of the Rings: The Card Game

Smoke by Crystal Sully

Desperate Ravings by John Stanko – From Magic: The Gathering

Oldtown Raven by Carolina Eade – From A Game of Thrones: LCG

I was impressed with all of the submissions but as is always the case with these things, only one could become the winner. I took a page out of the COTR playbook and let facebook decide. The winner was to be determined by the most likes at the end of Sunday, November 20th, 2016. And that card was:

the-forsaken-inn

Titled, “The Forsaken Inn,” this card used the art from Joel Hustak called “Land of the Living Skies” and was submitted by Joseph Dresch as part of a set. Here is what Joseph had to say when he submitted:

“I’ve included a small adventure intro and some design commentary…
Encounter Set: The Beast of the Lone Lands
Deep in the Weather Hills – the vast swath of peaks and valleys that cuts through the desolate Lone Lands – a beast has awakened. A band of Orcs, ranging down from the dark mountains in the North of Eriador, have chanced upon a rare evil. Those who speak the language of Sindarin call them gaurhoth, but they are generally known by their name in the common tongue: werewolves. Ravenous from it’s long slumber, the great beast slinks from its’ forsaken caves – aided by a host of orcs – to capture travelers and slake it’s thirst for blood and manflesh.
Commentary: Using the images you provided I wanted to create a handful of cards for a hypothetical new encounter set – a horror inspired monster hunt in the desolate Lone Lands, east of Bree. Much like the sneak peeks FFG will put online for new adventure packs, I just wanted to give heroes a taste of the adventure in store!”
Congratulations, Joseph!
Thank you to everyone who entered into the contest. I hope you all enjoyed it and if you have any questions or suggestions regarding this and any future contests feel free to reach out!
See you all in a few weeks when I return to a more consistent release schedule and of course, have a Happy Thanksgiving!
